What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify who decides what goods are made, how work is assigned, and how resources are shared. They use those details to distinguish economies guided by custom from economies directed by rulers or governments.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly classify examples from different civilizations and cite specific evidence for each choice. They explain that a civilization may show features of more than one economic system.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think traditional means outdated or that command means military control. They may focus only on trade or money instead of who makes economic decisions. They may also assume every civilization fits one category perfectly.
How to Assess It
- Give students one village economy description and one Inca economy description. Ask them to label each traditional or command and underline two supporting details.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs civilization evidence cards to sort into custom-based decisions, central authority decisions, or mixed features.
Ask students to write: Who decided what people produced in an Inca community, and what evidence supports your answer?
Play Economy Detective by reading short civilization scenarios while teams identify the system and name the clue that revealed it.
Compare a family business passing down job roles with a government ration plan, then identify who controls each economic decision.
