What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how imports, exports, specialization, trade, and exchange rates connect the United States with other economies. They examine how trade choices affect prices, jobs, businesses, and consumers.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can trace a product from production to sale across several countries. They can predict how a tariff, currency change, or supply disruption could affect American consumers and businesses.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think imports always harm the economy and exports always help it. They may also think a trade deficit means a country is losing money, or that foreign producers pay all tariff costs.

How to Assess It

Give students a scenario where the United States adds a tariff to imported shoes. Ask them to explain one likely effect on prices, consumers, and American shoe companies.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs five product labels; students identify origin countries, sort each item as an import, and connect origins to Florida on a map.

  2. Ask students to write: How can buying an imported shirt affect American consumers, workers, businesses, and trading partners?

  3. Run a trade game where groups exchange resource cards, then add a tariff card and record who gains, loses, or pays more.

  4. Students trace a smartphone's parts, assembly, shipping, and sale, then explain how American buyers and firms depend on several countries.
