What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read GDP per capita data for the United States and several other countries. They use the data to compare likely access to goods, services, housing, health care, and education.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify countries with higher or lower GDP per capita than the United States. They support comparisons with figures and explain that GDP per capita is useful but does not show income distribution or every part of daily life.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse total GDP with GDP per capita or assume a large population means a high standard of living. They may also treat GDP per capita as a complete measure of happiness, equality, or quality of life.
How to Assess It
- Give students GDP per capita figures for the United States and two countries, then ask them to write one comparison and one limitation of the data.
