What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how countries earn income from one main resource or from several industries. They compare how each economy handles price changes, resource shortages, job losses, and trade disruptions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can classify an economy using evidence about its exports and industries. They can explain why dependence on one resource creates different risks than relying on several sectors.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a resource means only oil or minerals, not crops, timber, or tourism. They may assume a wealthy economy is always diversified. They may also think diversification prevents all economic problems.
How to Assess It
- Give students two country profiles with export data. Ask them to classify each economy and explain which would better withstand a sharp drop in oil prices.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups export cards and counters, then remove one major export to model how each country's income and jobs change.
Ask students to write which economy would recover faster after a hurricane, using two details about its industries and resources.
Play a sorting game where students place country scenarios under one-resource, diversified, or insufficient evidence, then defend one choice.
Compare actual export charts for Saudi Arabia and the United States, then identify how their economic risks differ.
