What Students Need to Do: Students identify resources that ancient societies lacked or could not access easily. They explain how people responded through trade, irrigation, storage, migration, conquest, or substitution.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a map or short scenario, students name the scarce resource and choose a reasonable response. They support their choice with evidence about geography, technology, or nearby societies.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think scarcity means a resource does not exist anywhere, rather than being limited or hard to obtain. They may also assume irrigation creates water or that ancient trade always used money.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “A river city has grain but little timber. Name two ways its people could get timber and explain one likely result.”

Lesson moves

Give groups resource tokens and an ancient region map, then have them trade, migrate, build canals, or plan substitutes for missing resources.
Ask students to write: “Which response to a missing resource would most change an ancient society, and why?”
Play a scenario card game where students match shortages such as water, timber, or metal with workable ancient responses.
Compare an ancient timber shortage with a local supply shortage, then list similar and different ways people respond.
