What Students Need to Do: Students connect farming, irrigation, grazing, tree cutting, and city growth to changes in land and water. They use evidence to explain causes and effects.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can explain how one ancient society changed its environment and identify a result for people or ecosystems. They support the explanation with a map, image, artifact, or short source.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume ancient populations were too small to cause environmental damage. They may also confuse natural changes, such as drought, with human effects like erosion, deforestation, or soil salinization.
How to Assess It: Give students a picture of an ancient irrigation system and ask: “Name one ecosystem change it could cause and explain how people caused it.”

Lesson moves

Use soil trays, water, and plant cover to model how ancient farming and tree removal affected erosion.
Ask students to write which had the greater ecosystem impact in Mesopotamia, irrigation or city growth, using two facts.
Play a cause-and-effect card match with ancient practices, including overgrazing, irrigation, mining, deforestation, erosion, and salinization.
Compare an ancient irrigation problem with a modern local water-use issue using a two-column chart.
