What Students Need to Do

Students explain how climate, water, soil, vegetation, and landforms affect where people live and how they make a living. They also describe how people adapt to and change their surroundings.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can use maps or examples to connect population patterns with environmental conditions. They can support each connection with clear evidence and explain effects in both directions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume people can settle anywhere without limits or that harsh environments have no population. They may also confuse an ecosystem with climate alone and overlook human changes such as irrigation, farming, and urban growth.

How to Assess It

Show a physical map and population map of the same region. Ask students to name one pattern and explain how an environmental feature may have caused it.

   Give groups climate, vegetation, water, and population cards, then have them build and explain a settlement map.

   Ask students to write: Why do large cities often grow near rivers, coasts, or other reliable water sources?

   Play a matching game that pairs environments with likely jobs, housing, food sources, and population patterns.

   Use a local map to identify how water, terrain, and vegetation have shaped nearby neighborhoods, roads, farms, or businesses.
