What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how climate, water, landforms, soil, and natural resources affect where people settle and how they live. They also explain how settlement, farming, and resource use change local environments.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use a map, image, or short case study to connect environmental conditions with population patterns. They support each connection with specific evidence and describe effects in both directions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume people settle only where climates are mild or that dense populations always destroy ecosystems. They may also name a resource without explaining how it affects jobs, settlement, or land use.
How to Assess It
- Show a map with rivers, mountains, rainfall, and population density. Ask students to explain two population patterns and one likely environmental effect of settlement.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups climate, resource, landform, and settlement cards, then have them build and defend two logical ecosystem and population matches.
Ask students to write: How can a river shape a community, and how can that community change the river?
Play a map evidence challenge where teams earn points by linking population patterns to labeled environmental features.
Compare local population growth maps with wetlands or land use maps, then identify one visible environmental change.
