What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify actions such as farming, construction, mining, pollution, and conservation. They explain how each action changes land, water, air, or habitats, using evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can trace a clear cause-and-effect chain from a human decision to an environmental result. They can compare benefits, costs, and possible ways to reduce damage.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every human action harms nature or that conservation has no costs. They may confuse an environmental effect with its cause. They may also overlook indirect or long-term effects.
How to Assess It
- Give students this prompt: “A town replaces a wetland with a shopping center. Name two environmental effects and explain one way to reduce them.”

Ways to Teach It
Pour equal amounts of water over soil trays with grass, bare soil, and pavement to compare runoff and erosion.
Write a claim about whether a new highway should cross a forest, using two environmental effects as evidence.
Sort action cards and effect cards, then race to build accurate cause-and-effect chains with a partner.
Use local aerial photos to identify recent development and predict its effects on runoff, habitats, and water quality.
