What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify ways choices such as farming, building, mining, and waste disposal change land, water, air, and habitats. They explain cause-and-effect links and compare harmful effects with efforts to reduce or repair damage.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can examine a map, photo, or short case study and name the action, the environmental change, and who or what is affected. They support the link with evidence and suggest a realistic response.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume every environmental change is harmful, or that only factories cause damage. They may confuse a natural event with a human cause, or name an effect without explaining the chain of events.

How to Assess It

Show a photo of land cleared beside a river. Ask students to name one likely environmental effect and explain the cause-and-effect chain in two sentences.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build two soil trays, one bare and one covered with grass, pour equal water, and compare runoff and soil loss.

  2. Write a claim answering, “Should a town replace wetlands with housing?” using one environmental effect and one piece of evidence.

  3. Race in teams to match action cards, such as fertilizer use, with effect cards, such as algae growth, then explain each link.

  4. Use a local map to find one road, farm, or development near water and predict one likely environmental effect.
