What Students Need to Do

Students explain how climate, water, landforms, plants, and animals affect where people live and how they meet their needs. They also describe how people adapt to and change ecosystems.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use maps and examples to connect population patterns with ecosystem features. They can explain both benefits and problems caused by human changes to an ecosystem.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think ecosystems affect animals but not people. They may also assume crowded places always have abundant natural resources or that human changes have only harmful effects.

How to Assess It

Give students a map showing rainfall, rivers, and population density. Ask them to write two sentences explaining one population pattern and one likely human impact.

   Place ecosystem and settlement cards on a floor map, then have students justify where each community would most likely develop.

   Ask students to write: How might life change if your community lost reliable access to fresh water?

   Play a matching game connecting ecosystem features, such as fertile soil or drought, with likely population patterns and adaptations.

4. 04

   Compare Florida wetland development with Everglades restoration, then list how each choice affects people, water, and wildlife.
