What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare exchange rates before and after a currency changes value. They calculate prices across currencies and predict effects on imports, exports, buyers, and sellers.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given two exchange rates, students correctly calculate how a product or service price changes for a foreign buyer. They explain that a stronger dollar usually makes imports cheaper for Americans and U.S. exports more expensive abroad.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a stronger currency always helps everyone in that country. They often reverse which goods become cheaper or confuse exchange-rate changes with inflation.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A $300 U.S. bicycle costs €240 when $1 equals €0.80, then €270 when $1 equals €0.90. Explain how this may affect European demand.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs currency cards and product price tags, then have them calculate which imported goods become cheaper after an exchange-rate change.

  2. Ask who benefits when the dollar strengthens: a Florida importer, a U.S. exporter, or an American tourist abroad, and require evidence.

  3. Run an exchange-rate relay where teams sort scenario cards into imports rise, exports rise, imports fall, or exports fall.

  4. Compare current exchange rates and estimate the dollar cost of the same phone, hotel room, or streaming service in two countries.
