What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students trace how people, businesses, states, and countries depend on one another for goods, labor, resources, and markets. They weigh benefits and risks using evidence from trade and supply chains.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can map a product from raw materials to sale and explain how each participant depends on the others. The student can predict how a disruption affects producers, workers, prices, and consumers.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think countries either make everything themselves or depend only on foreign producers. They may also assume trade benefits everyone equally or confuse interdependence with one-sided dependence.

How to Assess It

Give students a supply chain for a smartphone and remove one supplier. Ask them to explain two effects on businesses or consumers and support each effect with evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups product, resource, factory, shipping, and store cards, then have them build a supply chain with yarn and remove one link.

  2. Ask students to write: Does relying on other countries make the United States stronger, weaker, or both? Use two examples.

  3. Run a trade simulation where groups exchange limited resource cards to complete products, then add a shipping delay or tariff round.

  4. Have students inspect labels on three classroom items, identify their countries of origin, and explain how American buyers and foreign producers depend on each other.
