What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how trade affected Native Americans, European explorers, and colonists. They identify benefits, such as new goods, and harms, such as dependence, conflict, and resource loss.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name an item exchanged and explain its effect on each group. They can support whether an effect was positive or negative with a clear historical reason.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every exchange helped both groups equally. They may confuse voluntary trade with theft or conquest, or treat disease as a traded good rather than a result of contact.
How to Assess It
- Give students this prompt: “Native Americans traded furs for European metal tools. Name one benefit and one possible harm for either group.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups fur, corn, cloth, and tool cards to trade, then have them record who gained, who lost, and why.
Ask students to write: “Did trade help Native Americans and Europeans equally?” using two examples as evidence.
Play an effect-card sort where teams classify outcomes by group and as positive, negative, or both.
Have students check clothing labels at home, map two countries of origin, and compare that exchange with colonial trade.
