What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how a buyer pays a seller who accepts a different national currency. They use a simple exchange rate to show how banks or currency markets convert the payment.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify which currency each trading partner uses and explain where conversion occurs. Given a basic exchange rate, the student can find the amount needed in another currency.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all countries accept U.S. dollars or that an exchange rate is only a bank fee. They may also assume exchange rates stay fixed or that a stronger dollar helps every participant.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A Japanese seller charges ¥30,000 and $1 equals ¥150. Find the dollar cost and explain why currency exchange is needed.

Play a matching game with buyer currencies, seller currencies, exchange rates, and converted prices.
Use a current online exchange rate to calculate the dollar cost of a concert ticket, hotel room, or meal in another country.
