What Students Need to Do: Students identify who provides an item or service and who receives it in a transaction. They explain whether payment or barter completes the exchange.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can label the buyer and seller in examples such as a grocery purchase or haircut. They can compare paying with money to trading one item for another.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the seller is always a store or that services are physical objects. They may also confuse barter with getting something for free.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “Luis trades two oranges to Ana for a book. Who provides each item, and is money or barter used?”

Lesson moves

Set up a classroom market with item cards, service cards, play money, and trade tokens, then have students switch buyer and seller roles.
Ask students to write about buying a snack and trading snacks, then explain how the two exchanges differ.
Play Transaction Sort by having teams sort scenario cards into money exchanges, barter exchanges, goods, and services.
Examine a store receipt and identify what the customer received, what the business received, and each participant’s role.
