What Students Need to Do

Students identify a current issue involving more than one country. They explain what the United States has done about it and weigh the effects on people in the United States and abroad.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain why countries disagree about an issue and name a specific U.S. response, such as aid, sanctions, or diplomacy. They use evidence to judge one benefit and one possible cost of that response.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume the United States controls decisions made by other countries. They may also treat a policy's goal as proof that it worked, or describe an issue from only the U.S. point of view.

How to Assess It

Give students a short news summary about a current international issue. Ask: What did the United States do, who was affected, and what evidence shows one benefit or cost?

   Give pairs a map and three short news excerpts about one international issue, then have them mark the countries involved and each country's concern.

   Ask students to write: Should the United States send aid, impose sanctions, or negotiate in this case? Defend one choice and name a drawback.

   Hand out cards naming U.S. actions and possible effects, then have teams match each action to an effect and explain their reasoning.

   Compare the country labels on classroom supplies, then discuss how a trade restriction could affect shoppers and workers in both countries.
