What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify a current international issue, explain the main actors and interests, and describe the U.S. response. They use evidence to judge goals, results, tradeoffs, and effects on different groups.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain why the United States chose diplomacy, sanctions, aid, trade policy, or military action in a specific case. They can support a judgment about its impact with facts from reliable sources.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume the president controls foreign policy alone or that every U.S. action involves the military. They may confuse foreign aid with loans or judge a policy only by its intended goal. They may also treat one news source as complete evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students two short news summaries about one international issue. Ask: “What policy tool is the United States using, what is one likely benefit, and what is one possible cost?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a world map, country cards, and string to model alliances, trade ties, and conflicts connected to one current issue.

  2. Ask students to write: “Should the United States use aid, sanctions, diplomacy, or military action in this case? Defend your choice.”

  3. Run a policy tool card sort where students match six world scenarios with diplomacy, sanctions, aid, trade policy, alliances, or military action.

  4. Students compare two current headlines about the same U.S. foreign policy decision and list differences in facts, emphasis, and viewpoint.
