What Students Need to Do: Students describe the attacks, identify al-Qaeda as responsible, and explain why the day became a major turning point. They connect it to changes in national security, foreign policy, air travel, civil liberties, and public remembrance.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students give an accurate account without blaming an entire religion or ethnic group. They use specific evidence to explain at least two immediate effects and two lasting effects.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse al-Qaeda with Iraq or blame all Muslims for the attacks. They may also mix up the four planes, their targets, and later government responses.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Name one immediate effect and one lasting effect of the attacks. Explain each connection in one sentence.

Lesson moves

Give pairs event and response cards to sort into a timeline, including the attacks, airport closures, the Patriot Act, and military action in Afghanistan.
Ask students to write: Which lasting change most affected daily life, foreign policy, or civil liberties, and what evidence supports your answer?
Play a cause and effect matching game using cards for specific events, policy responses, security changes, and public reactions.
Compare photos of airport screening before 2001 and now, then have students list three changes and explain why each occurred.
