What Students Need to Do: Students identify what happened in an international conflict and explain how the United States responded. They sort responses as diplomatic, economic, military, or humanitarian and describe the intended result.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can place events and U.S. responses in the correct order. They can use evidence from a source to explain why a response occurred and what followed.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume every U.S. response involved military force or confuse an action by the United Nations with a U.S. action. They may also reverse the triggering event and the response.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Name one international conflict, identify the event that prompted a U.S. response, and describe the response and one result.

Lesson moves

Give pairs event and response cards from Pearl Harbor, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Gulf War to match and arrange chronologically.
Ask students to write: Which U.S. response was most effective, and what two facts support your claim?
Play Response Sort by having teams classify conflict examples as diplomatic, economic, military, or humanitarian and defend each choice.
Use a current news article to identify a U.S. response abroad, then compare it with one historical response studied in class.
