What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify what buyers want and explain how sellers decide what to make or offer. They connect higher customer interest with providing more of a good or service.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a simple situation, students can name the customer, what is wanted, and what a seller should provide. They can explain the choice using evidence from customer requests.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think sellers provide only what they personally like. They may also confuse goods with services or think one customer request always represents high demand.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “At a school fair, 20 students request fruit cups and 4 request popcorn. What should the seller prepare more of, and why?”

Ways to Teach It
Set up a classroom store with item cards and tokens, tally customer choices, then have shopkeepers restock the most selected items.
Ask students to write: “Why might a toy store order more puzzles after many customers request them?”
Play Demand Detective by matching customer request cards with picture cards showing the best seller response.
Survey classmates about preferred snacks, graph the results, and write a recommendation to the cafeteria manager.
