What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare ways to handle financial risks, including paying losses themselves, lowering the chance of loss, and buying insurance. They explain the costs and benefits of each choice.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can match a risk-management choice to a given situation and explain the tradeoff. They can defend a choice using details such as premiums, deductibles, possible losses, and prevention costs.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think insurance prevents losses or pays every cost. They may also assume avoiding risk is free, accepting risk is always careless, or the lowest premium is always best.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: For a $700 laptop, give one way to accept, reduce, and transfer damage risk. State one cost and benefit for each choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have groups sort household risk cards under accept, reduce, or insure, then add one likely cost and benefit to each card.

  2. Ask students to write: Would you buy phone insurance, use a protective case, or accept the risk, and why?

  3. Play Risk Choice Relay, where teams match scenario cards with strategies and earn points for accurate cost and benefit explanations.

  4. Compare two sample auto insurance plans, then have students choose one based on premiums, deductibles, coverage limits, and personal risk.
