What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify situations where something unwanted might happen. They explain the possible harm or loss and compare which situations are more likely to cause it.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name a possible negative outcome in a familiar situation and explain why it may occur. The student can distinguish uncertain risk from certain harm.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think risk means the harm has already happened. They may also confuse a rare possibility with an event that is impossible or assume all risks are equally likely.

How to Assess It

Give this exit prompt: “A family takes a bicycle on a busy road without a helmet. What could go wrong, and is it certain to happen?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs five situation cards, such as biking, swimming, or carrying a glass, and have them identify possible unwanted outcomes.

  2. Ask students to write about one choice they made to reduce the chance of being hurt or losing something.

  3. Play Risk Sort by placing scenario cards under low, medium, or high chance, then have students defend one placement.

  4. Compare how helmets, seat belts, phone cases, and insurance each help people manage possible harm or loss.
