What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify possible harm or loss in familiar situations. They explain that careful choices can lower risk, but cannot remove every chance of an accident.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name a possible unexpected event and describe its effects. The student can suggest a precaution while recognizing that some risk remains.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think being careful removes all risk. They may confuse risk with certainty and assume a possible event will happen. They may also think unexpected events cannot be planned for at all.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A family packs carefully for a picnic. Name one unexpected event that could still happen and one way to prepare.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups picture cards of daily situations to sort into low-risk, high-risk, and risk-reduced categories, then defend one choice.
Ask students to write about a time when preparation helped, but could not guarantee that nothing would go wrong.
Play Risk Detective by reading scenario cards and awarding points for naming a possible event, its effect, and a precaution.
Have students examine a school field trip plan and identify one remaining risk after permission slips, weather checks, and safety rules.
