What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how money set aside can pay for surprise costs, such as replacing a broken bicycle tire. They identify emergencies and describe why saving regularly reduces the need to borrow.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can sort expenses into emergencies and planned purchases, then justify each choice. Given a simple allowance, the student can choose an amount to save and explain how it builds a cushion.

Common Misconceptions

Students may label any wanted item as an emergency. They may think emergency savings stop problems from happening, or that saving only means keeping money left after spending.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: You receive $10 each week, and your backpack zipper breaks. Explain how saving $2 each week could help.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs play money, savings envelopes, and surprise expense cards, then have them decide which costs their saved money can cover.

  2. Ask students to write about how a family might handle a broken refrigerator with and without emergency savings.

  3. Play an emergency fund game where students save part of each pretend paycheck before drawing random expense cards.

  4. Show a simple family budget and have students identify one expense that could be reduced to build emergency savings.
