What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain why someone might keep part of their money instead of spending it all now. They connect setting money aside with buying a chosen item later.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can choose a goal, name its price, and explain how repeated small deposits help reach it. The student can compare spending now with waiting for a larger purchase.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think money kept for later cannot be used, or that one small deposit will buy any item. They may also confuse needs, wants, and savings goals.

How to Assess It

Give students a picture of a $6 toy and three $2 coins. Ask them to draw or write what they could do each week to afford the toy.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs play coins, a labeled jar, and a toy price card, then have them add one coin per pretend week.

  2. Ask students to draw something they want later and complete, “I will set aside money because...”

  3. Play Goal Match by pairing item price cards with groups of play coins that build the correct total over several turns.

  4. Compare two classroom choices, spending five tokens on small prizes now or keeping them toward a larger class reward later.
