What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare spending money now with setting it aside for a future purchase. They identify what someone gives up when choosing to save.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a spending choice, students can name the item not bought now and the future goal the money supports. They can explain the tradeoff in their own words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think saving has no cost because the money is still theirs. They may also think saving means never spending or that any delay automatically leads to a larger purchase.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Maya can buy a book today for $8 or save the $8 toward $20 headphones. What does she give up by saving?

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs $10 in play money and choice cards, then have them choose a small item now or save toward a larger item.

  2. Students answer the prompt, “What would you skip buying this week to afford something bigger next month, and why?”

  3. Play Save or Spend: students draw goal and purchase cards, make a choice, and name what they give up.

  4. Compare saving for a bicycle with buying snacks after school, using local prices to calculate how each snack delays the bicycle purchase.
