What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name a specific purchase or experience that can motivate someone to save money. They explain how setting a clear goal can help a person delay spending now.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify a realistic savings goal and explain why it motivates saving. The student can connect regular saving with reaching that goal later.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse saving goals with the amount saved each week. They may also think a goal must be a physical item, rather than a service or experience.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Maya wants a $24 game and saves $4 each week. Name her savings goal and explain how it may help her avoid spending the $4.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs play money and price cards, then have them choose a goal and sort money into spend-now and save-later envelopes.
Have students write three sentences explaining what would motivate them to save instead of spending today.
Play Goal Match: students match picture cards showing wants with price cards and choose a weekly savings amount for each goal.
Use a store flyer to choose an item, record its price, and calculate how many weeks saving five dollars would take.
