What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name several places where money can be kept for later use. They distinguish saving cash at home from depositing money in a financial institution.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify a piggy bank, commercial bank, credit union, and savings and loan as possible saving places. The student can give a simple example of using each one.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think money is only saved in a piggy bank or that saving means spending less. They may also think banks and credit unions are stores where people buy money.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit ticket: "Name three places Maya could save $20. Circle one choice and explain how she would put the money there."

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up a cash box and mock account ledger; students deposit play money into each and record where the savings are kept.

  2. Ask, "Would you keep $10 at home or in an account, and why?" Students write two reasons and compare answers.

  3. Play Savings Choice: students draw an amount card, choose a workable saving place, and earn a point for a clear explanation.

  4. Send home a short survey asking which saving places family members use, then graph the anonymous class results.
