What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain where money from work can go. They sort examples into money set aside, purchases of goods or services, and taxes paid to government.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly classify each use of money in a paycheck scenario. They can distinguish a good from a service and explain why taxes are not optional spending.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think all money received is available to spend. They may confuse goods with services, or think sales tax is the only type of tax. Some also treat saving as money that disappears rather than money kept for later.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: Jordan earns $40, deposits $10, buys a notebook for $8, pays $15 for a haircut, and has $7 withheld for taxes. Label each use and identify the good and service.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs $50 in play money and labeled envelopes for savings, goods, services, and taxes, then have them explain their split.

  2. Ask students to write how they would divide $100 from a weekend job, then defend each choice to a partner.

  3. Run a card-sort relay where teams place paycheck scenarios under savings, goods, services, or taxes signs.

  4. Compare a sample pay stub, bank deposit slip, and store receipt to trace taxes, savings, and purchases from one paycheck.
