What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify goods and services people buy with earned money. They explain how purchases can provide enjoyment, comfort, convenience, or support for hobbies and interests.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can label a purchase as a good or service and name the source of money used. The student can explain why different people may choose different purchases for satisfaction.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think all earned money must be spent or that expensive purchases always create more happiness. They may also confuse physical goods with services or assume everyone enjoys the same things.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Maya earns $20 and buys art supplies and skating admission. Label each purchase as a good or service, then explain how each might satisfy her.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs $30 in play money and purchase cards, then have them choose goods and services that fit a character’s interests.

  2. Ask students to write which would bring them more satisfaction, a new book or a music lesson, and explain why.

  3. Play a card sort where teams classify purchases as goods or services and match each one to enjoyment, comfort, convenience, or hobbies.

  4. Have students compare local prices for one item and one activity, then choose how to spend a fixed allowance and explain their choice.
