What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare what they gain and give up when they save money or spend it. They explain how each choice affects what they can buy now and later.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can choose between saving and spending in a simple situation and give a clear reason. The student names one benefit and one cost of that choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think saving has no cost or that spending is always a bad choice. They may confuse the cost of a choice with only the item’s price.
How to Assess It
- Ask: “You have $5. You can buy a toy today or save for a $10 game. What would you choose, and what do you gain and give up?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 10 play coins and item cards, then have them choose what to buy, what to save, and explain each choice.
Ask students to write: “Would you spend $4 on a snack or save it for a book? Explain one benefit and one cost.”
Play a choice-card game where students sort saving and spending decisions, then earn a point for naming what each person gives up.
Compare saving for a class celebration with spending class funds now, using a simple chart of current and future choices.
