What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify what they would gain and give up with each spending choice. They compare options, consider their budget and needs, then explain which choice fits best.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can list specific costs and benefits for two purchase options. The student chooses one option and supports the decision with accurate details rather than price alone.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat price as the only cost or assume the cheapest option is always best. They may list product features without explaining how those features affect the decision. Some forget that choosing one item means giving up another option.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: You have $10 and may buy either an $8 book or a $6 puzzle. Name one cost and benefit of each, then explain your choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs 10 play dollars and three item cards, then have them choose one item and list what they gain and give up.

  2. Write which lunch option you would choose, then support your choice with one cost and two benefits.

  3. Play a choice-card game where students sort each result under cost or benefit, then explain one disputed card.

  4. Compare two class party plans with fixed budgets, prices, and features, then vote for the option with the stronger tradeoff.
