What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose between two wanted options and name what they did not choose. They explain that choosing one option means missing the other.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given two choices, students identify both the selected option and the option left behind. They correctly call the option left behind the opportunity cost.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think cost always means money. They may name the chosen item as the opportunity cost or think they can have both options.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “You can draw or play with blocks. You choose blocks. What is your opportunity cost?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give each student one token to trade for either a sticker or an eraser, then name the item not chosen.

  2. Ask students to draw two free-time choices, circle one, and explain what they would miss by choosing it.

  3. Play Choice Pairs by showing two picture cards and having students name the opportunity cost after choosing one.

  4. Let the class choose between five minutes of drawing or dancing, then discuss what the class gave up.
