What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare choices for building career skills and name what a person gives up with each choice. They consider lost time, effort, spending, and missed earnings or activities.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify the next best alternative given up when someone chooses a course, certification, or training program. They explain costs beyond tuition using evidence from a scenario.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count only fees and ignore lost work hours, study time, or effort. They may list every disadvantage instead of identifying the next best alternative given up.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Jordan leaves a weekend job to attend a six-week coding course. Name one money cost and the opportunity cost of Jordan's choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups budget, schedule, and training cards, then have them choose one program and list what they must give up.
Ask students to write: Would you spend 100 hours earning a certificate that may raise future pay, and what would you sacrifice?
Play Choice Trade-Off, where pairs draw career scenarios and earn points for correctly naming the next best option given up.
Compare a local apprenticeship, community college program, and immediate employment using posted costs, time demands, and possible missed earnings.
