Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students take part in simple group decisions and explain ways people help their classroom or community. They listen to others, share ideas, and use voting when the group needs to choose.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name ways to participate, such as voting, attending a meeting, sharing an idea, or helping with a community project. The student can take turns and accept a group decision.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think only adults or leaders can make a difference. They may also think voting means everyone gets their first choice or that the loudest opinion wins.
How to Assess It: Ask students to choose the best way for a class to select a new read-aloud book and explain why. Look for voting, fair participation, and acceptance of the result.

Lesson moves

Set up a class vote with paper ballots to choose between two recess games, then count the votes together.
Ask, “How can a first grader help make our classroom better?” and have students draw and label one action.
Play a participation sort using cards labeled voting, listening, interrupting, volunteering, ignoring, and sharing ideas.
Plan a small class service project, such as collecting playground litter, and assign students roles through a group decision.
