What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify Florida symbols from pictures and names, including the state flag, seal, flower, bird, and tree. They recognize the current governor as a state leader and tell how each example connects to Florida.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given mixed national, state, and local images, a student correctly selects the Florida examples. The student names familiar symbols and leaders and gives a simple reason each represents the state.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the United States flag, bald eagle, or Statue of Liberty as Florida symbols. They may treat any beach or theme park logo as an official symbol. They may call the governor the president or assume the same person is always governor.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of the Florida flag, state seal, orange blossom, United States flag, Statue of Liberty, and current governor. Ask students to circle the four Florida examples and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs cards showing Florida symbols, the current governor, and unrelated examples to sort into Florida and not Florida groups.
Show the Florida flag and a current governor portrait, then ask, “What clues connect each image to Florida?”
Play Florida Symbol Bingo with picture clues, requiring students to name each symbol or leader before covering a square.
Open Florida’s official website, find the flag, seal, and governor, then create a three-item classroom reference card.
