What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify Florida’s flag and seal, the governor, and the Florida Constitution. They sort each as a symbol, individual, or document and explain its connection to Florida.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given pictures and names, a student correctly matches the state flag, seal, governor, and constitution to Florida. The student gives one accurate fact about each.

Common Misconceptions

Students may mistake United States symbols for Florida symbols. They may call the governor the president or confuse the Florida Constitution with the United States Constitution.

How to Assess It

Show cards for the Florida flag, state seal, governor, and Florida Constitution. Students label each symbol, individual, or document and write one fact about it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs cards showing Florida’s flag, seal, governor, Capitol, and constitution to sort into symbols, people, places, and documents.

  2. Ask, “Which item best represents Florida, and what details support your choice?” Have students write two sentences, then share.

  3. Play a matching game pairing each image with its name and role, such as governor with leader of Florida’s executive branch.

  4. Examine a Florida license plate or state website screenshot, then circle and name any state symbols students find.
