What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain patriotism as being loyal to and caring about their country. They identify simple actions that can show that loyalty.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can give a clear, age-appropriate meaning for patriotism. The student can identify examples and nonexamples, then explain one choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think patriotism only means waving a flag or saying the pledge. They may confuse loving their country with disliking other countries or agreeing with everything leaders do.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw one way a person can show loyalty to their country, then complete, “This shows patriotism because _____.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards showing different actions, then have them sort the cards into “shows patriotism” and “does not show patriotism.”
Ask students to finish orally or in writing, “Patriotism means _____, and one way to show it is _____.”
Play a sorting relay where teams place scenario cards under “patriotism” or “not patriotism,” then explain each placement.
Walk to the school flag, practice respectful behavior, and ask the principal or custodian why the flag is displayed.
