What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use maps and sources to explain where people settle and why. They describe how migration, culture, resources, and the environment shape communities.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify settlement patterns on a map and support an explanation with map evidence. They compare two communities by location, culture, movement, or use of resources.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think people settle evenly across a region or choose locations for only one reason. They may confuse migration with short trips and assume all communities share one culture.

How to Assess It

Give students a physical map and a population map. Ask them to name one settlement pattern and explain it using evidence from both maps.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Layer a population map over a physical map with tracing paper, then mark three places where land or water affects settlement.

  2. Write a response to the prompt, “Why might a family move to or leave a community?” using two specific reasons.

  3. Play Settlement Detective by matching community cards with clues about climate, jobs, transportation, language, and natural resources.

  4. Study a local map and identify how roads, waterways, schools, and businesses influence where people live and gather.
