What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify common landforms and bodies of water in pictures, maps, and models. They describe seasonal weather changes and tell how weather affects people and the environment.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can correctly name features such as mountains, hills, rivers, lakes, and oceans. The student can describe a weather change and choose a sensible response, such as wearing a coat in cold weather.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call every body of water an ocean or confuse hills with mountains. They may also confuse daily weather with seasons or think all places have the same weather.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture with a hill, river, and rainy sky. Ask, “Name two physical features and tell one way the weather could affect people.”

Ways to Teach It
Use clay and a shallow water tray to build mountains, hills, rivers, lakes, and oceans, then label each feature.
Show two seasonal pictures and ask, “What changed, and how would people dress or act differently?”
Play a picture-card sort where students place cards under landform, body of water, weather, or weather effect.
Check the local forecast, then have students choose clothing and playground plans that fit the predicted weather.
