What Students Need to Do: Students recognize and name common bodies of water, such as oceans, lakes, rivers, and ponds. They use visible features, including size, shape, and movement, to tell them apart.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly label photographs or simple map symbols for an ocean, lake, river, and pond. They give one observable clue for each choice.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call every body of water an ocean or lake. They may confuse rivers with long lakes, or think ponds and lakes are different only because of shape.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of an ocean, lake, river, and pond. Ask students to name each one and explain one clue that helped.

Lesson moves

Shape blue clay into an ocean, lake, river, and pond on a tray, then add labels beside each model.
Show a water photograph and ask, “What body of water is this, and what clue helped you decide?”
Play Water Match by pairing body-of-water word cards with photograph cards, then checking matches with a partner.
Use a local map to find a nearby ocean, lake, river, or pond and discuss how people use it.
