What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how people depend on, adapt to, and change their environment. They connect human actions to effects on land, water, resources, and communities.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can examine a map, image, or short scenario and identify an environmental feature, a human action, and its effect. They can explain both benefits and costs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume the environment affects people but people do not affect the environment. They may also describe every human change as harmful or confuse weather events with long-term environmental conditions.
How to Assess It
- Give students this prompt: “Settlers clear trees and build farms beside a river.” Ask them to name one benefit, one environmental change, and one possible problem.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups clay, foil, and craft sticks to build a settlement near a river, then label two environmental changes and effects.
Ask students to write: How did access to rivers help communities while also creating environmental problems?
Play a cause-and-effect card match using drought, farming, roads, forests, migration, flooding, irrigation, and pollution.
Use a local land-use map to compare parks, homes, and roads, then explain one benefit and one environmental cost.
