What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify a natural event before 1850, such as an earthquake, flood, drought, or severe storm, and describe what changed. They explain effects on people, settlements, land, rivers, plants, or animals using maps, images, or short sources.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name when and where an event occurred and separate human effects from physical effects. The student connects each effect to the event with evidence, such as damaged towns, migration, crop loss, or a changed river channel.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often list damage without explaining how the event caused it. They may confuse human effects, such as migration, with physical effects, such as changed waterways. Some choose events after 1850 or assume every change was permanent.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: After reading a short account of the New Madrid earthquakes, name one effect on people or settlements and one effect on land or water. Explain each link in one sentence.
