What this standard means
Students need to make and read line plots where the data are fractional measurements, such as 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 inch or cup. They also need to use fraction operations to answer questions from the plot, like total amount, difference, or fair share.
Mastery looks like choosing the right scale, placing each X accurately, and using the plot to solve problems without recounting randomly. Students often get stuck when fractions have different denominators, when tick marks are not evenly spaced, or when the question asks for equal sharing from the total.
Ways to teach it
- Have students measure 10 classroom objects to the nearest eighth inch, then build a line plot together on grid paper.
- Ask students to write: What does each X on a line plot mean, and how can the plot help us find a total?
- Show a small line plot of cup measurements and ask students to find the total liquid in under three minutes.
- Use snack bag weights or water amounts in cups to ask how much each bag or cup would have if shared equally.
