Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators.

- Students rewrite fractions as equivalent fractions with a common denominator. They then add or subtract the numerators, simplify the result, and handle mixed numbers accurately.

Common Misconceptions
- Students often add or subtract the denominators along with the numerators. Some change the denominator but forget to scale the numerator by the same factor. With mixed numbers, they may forget to regroup before subtracting.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Solve 3 1/4 minus 1 2/3. Show the equivalent fractions you used and explain one step in a sentence.
