What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students rewrite fractions with unlike denominators as equivalent fractions with a common denominator. They then add or subtract the numerators and simplify the result.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students find a common denominator and rewrite each fraction correctly. They add or subtract accurately, simplify when needed, and use estimates to check whether answers make sense.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add or subtract both numerators and denominators. Some change only the denominator when making equivalent fractions. Others forget to regroup mixed numbers or simplify the final answer.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Solve 3/4 + 2/3. Show the equivalent fractions you used, then explain why your answer is reasonable.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs fraction strips to model 1/2 + 1/3, then replace each fraction with equal-sized sixths and record the equation.

  2. Ask, “Why can we add 3/8 and 2/8 directly, but not 3/8 and 2/5?” Students explain with words or drawings.

  3. Play Common Denominator Match by having students pair fraction cards with equivalent-fraction cards before solving each addition or subtraction problem.

  4. Use a recipe card and ask students to find the total amount of flour from two fractional measurements with different denominators.
