The standard
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units— whole numbers, halves, or quarters.

What this standard means
Students need to measure real objects to the nearest half inch and quarter inch. Then they use those measurements as data, not just as isolated answers. They need to place each measurement on a line plot with a clear title, labels, and a scale that fits the data.
Mastery looks like accurate ruler placement, careful reading of halves and fourths, and correct X marks above each value. Students often start measuring from the edge of the ruler instead of zero. They also mix up fourths, such as reading 2 3/4 as 2 1/4, or choose a line plot scale that skips needed values.
Ways to teach it
- Have students measure 10 classroom pencils to the nearest quarter inch, then build a shared line plot on chart paper.
- Ask students to write which pencil length was most common and explain how the line plot proves it.
- Give three object measurements and a blank number line, then ask students to add the correct X marks.
- Measure hand spans of classmates, make a line plot, and discuss how a glove maker could use the data.
