The Standard
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units— whole numbers, halves, or quarters.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use inch rulers to find and record lengths to the nearest quarter inch. They organize repeated measurements on a line plot with a scale that matches the data.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student aligns each object with zero, reads quarter-inch intervals correctly, and records mixed numbers such as 2 1/4 inches. The student places one X for every measurement above the correct value and explains what the plot shows.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may line up an object with the ruler’s edge instead of zero, or count tick marks rather than spaces. They may confuse 1/4 with 3/4, treat 2/4 as different from 1/2, or space values unevenly. Some forget that repeated measurements need repeated Xs.
How to Assess It
- Give students three paper strips and a quarter-inch ruler. Ask them to record each length and make a labeled line plot with one X per strip.
