The standard

Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots.

What this standard means

Students need to measure or read measurements in halves, fourths, and eighths, then place each value correctly on a line plot. They also need to use the plot to answer questions that require adding and subtracting fractions, not just counting Xs.

Mastery looks like a student making an evenly spaced line plot, labeling fractional tick marks correctly, and explaining answers such as the difference between the longest and shortest item. Common sticking points are uneven number lines, mixing up fourths and eighths, and forgetting to simplify or compare fractions before solving.

Ways to teach it

  • Have students measure 10 classroom pencils to the nearest eighth inch, then build a shared line plot with sticky notes or X marks.
  • Ask, “What is the difference between the longest and shortest pencil, and how can the line plot prove it?”
  • Give a small line plot and ask students to find the total length of two selected items and the range of the data.
  • Connect to a garden task by plotting plant heights to the nearest quarter inch and comparing the tallest and shortest seedlings.
