The standard
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.

What this standard means
Students need to measure objects to the nearest whole unit, record the results, and display the data on a line plot. They may measure several different objects, or measure the same object more than once and compare the results.
Mastery looks like careful measuring, clear labels, accurate X marks, and a scale that counts by ones. Students often get stuck starting at the wrong end of the ruler, rounding to the nearest whole unit, spacing the scale evenly, or putting data points above the wrong number.
Ways to teach it
- Have students measure 8 classroom items in inches, record each length, then build a line plot with sticky notes as X marks.
- Ask: Which length happened most often in our data, and how can the line plot prove it?
- Give 5 measurement cards and a blank line plot, then check whether students place each X above the correct whole number.
- Measure student pencils before sharpening, then make a class line plot to see the most common pencil length.
