The Standard
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students measure a set of objects using the same unit and record each result as a whole number. They organize the results on a line plot, placing one X for every measurement.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student measures from zero, labels a whole-number scale, and plots every result in the correct column. They can count measurements at each length and compare frequencies.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may begin measuring at the ruler’s edge instead of zero or mix inches and centimeters. They may use uneven scale intervals or draw one X per length rather than one X per measurement.
How to Assess It
- Give each student five paper strips and a ruler. Ask them to measure each strip in centimeters, record the results, and make a labeled line plot.

Set out eight classroom objects; students measure each in centimeters, record the lengths, and build a line plot with sticky-note Xs.
Display a line plot and ask, “How do you know each measurement is represented exactly once?” Students explain in two sentences.
Play Plot It: partners draw measurement cards, place counters above matching whole numbers, then check the scale and total.
Measure classmates’ pencil lengths to the nearest centimeter, then plot the data to decide which pencil length is most common.
