What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students work with a group to turn a testable question into a fair investigation. They choose one factor to change, decide what to measure, keep other conditions constant, and record metric data. They also select materials and tools to build and test a device that solves a stated problem.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can write a clear plan that names the independent variable, dependent variable, constants, measurements, and tools. They collect organized data with correct metric units. Their device meets the given criteria, and they use test results to explain a revision.

Common Misconceptions

Students may change several factors at once or confuse the independent variable with the measured result. They may list constants but fail to control them during testing. Some collect unrelated observations, choose incorrect metric units, or build a device without testing it against the criteria.

How to Assess It

Give pairs a 20-centimeter square of foil and ask them to build a boat that holds the most pennies. Have them name the changed feature, measured result, constants, metric measurement, and one revision based on test data.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Pairs test how ramp height affects toy car distance, measuring in centimeters and keeping the car, ramp surface, and release point constant.

  2. Ask, “Which data would prove that one paper towel absorbs more water than another, and what must stay the same?”

  3. Play Variable Sort: teams place scenario cards under independent variable, dependent variable, constant, tool, or measurement, then defend one choice.

  4. Have students design a cardboard phone stand for a set screen angle, test stability, measure dimensions, and revise one feature.
